The journey to Base Camp takes you through Uganda’s vibrant landscapes, charming towns, and scenic countryside—all leading to the edge of Murchison Falls National Park. For those keen to explore at their own pace, self-driving is a great option. You can rent a reliable 4x4 from trusted companies like Roadtrip Africa, or other local operators based in Kampala and Entebbe. Vehicles can be equipped with GPS, camping gear, or even a driver-guide if preferred. Here’s everything you need to know about reaching us by road:
1. Guests Arriving From Kampala or Entebbe (Central) (Approx. 4–6 hours | ~270 KM):
This is the most common route for guests arriving from Uganda’s capital or international airport:
-
From Entebbe, expect an additional 30–50 minutes to connect to Kampala using the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway.
-
From Kampala, travel northwest along the Kampala–Gulu highway (A109). The road is fully paved and generally in good condition, though traffic can be heavy near the city.
-
The drive takes you through beautiful countryside towns like Nakasongola and eventually Masindi. Look out for great stopovers for fuel, restrooms, and refreshments especially after Migyera town.
-
At Kafu River Junction, turn left toward Masindi. From Masindi, take Kigumba road heading toward Kichumbanyobo Gate— the southern entrance to Murchison Falls National Park. Base Camp is located just outside the gate, offering easy access to the park.
-
Tip: Start your journey early in the morning to avoid city traffic and enjoy daylight driving.
2. Guests Arriving From Kidepo or Gulu (North) (Approx. 4–9 hours | ~408 KM):
If you're exploring Kidepo and heading south, here’s how to reach us:
-
Drive south from Kidepo via Kitgum and Gulu, then join the Gulu–Kampala highway.
-
At Kigumba town, turn right toward Masindi, then follow the road to Kichumbanyobo Gate— the southern entrance to Murchison Falls National Park. Base Camp is located just outside the gate, offering easy access to the park and all its incredible activities.
-
The drive is long but incredibly scenic, with changing landscapes from dry savannah to lush forest edges.
-
This route is ideal if you're connecting Uganda’s northern and central parks in one itinerary.
-
Tip: It’s best to break up the trip from Kidepo with a short stopover in Gulu, especially if you are self-driving.
3. Guests Arriving From Fort Portal or Kibale (South) (Approx. 4–6 hours | ~274 KM):
For guests heading from South-western Uganda—perhaps after chimp trekking in Kibale National Park, the route to Base Camp is peaceful and lush, winding through rolling hills and vibrant local villages:
-
Drive from Fort Portal toward Kyenjojo, then connect to the Hoima–Masindi road.
-
From Hoima, it’s a direct route to Masindi, and then onward along Kigumba Road to Kichumbanyobo Gate— the southern entrance to Murchison Falls National Park. Base Camp is located just outside the gate, offering easy access to the park.
-
We recommend this route for those combining multiple parks (e.g., Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo or Kibale, and Murchison Falls) into one incredible road trip.
-
Tip: Leave early and watch out for livestock or motorbikes near trading centers.
