Common Questions About Our Tanzania Safaris
1. What makes Tanzania unique as a safari destination?
Tanzania is home to Africa’s most iconic wildlife experiences, including the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar’s beaches. The Great Migration originates here. Tanzania offers both classic wildlife viewing and remote, off-the-beaten-path safaris in southern parks like Selous (Nyerere NP) and Ruaha. It’s ideal for luxury travelers, adventure seekers, and conservation-conscious guests alike.
2. When is the best time to visit Tanzania?
Tanzania has two main dry seasons: June–October (peak game-viewing and Great Migration crossings in the Serengeti) and December–March (calving season in southern Serengeti). April–May sees heavy rains in the north, making travel trickier but offering discounts and green landscapes. Southern parks are best in the June–October dry window.
3. Do I need a visa to enter Tanzania?
Yes. Most travelers need a Tanzania tourist visa, which can be obtained online via the official e-visa portal or on arrival at major airports. The East African Tourist Visa is NOT ACCEPTED in Tanzania, so plan accordingly if visiting Uganda or Kenya.
4. Is Tanzania suitable for first-time safari travelers?
Yes. Tanzania is great for first-time safari-goers, especially along the Northern Circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara, Tarangire). Lodges and guides are experienced, and the wildlife viewing is often more consistent than in other regions. With support from operators like Base Camp, your journey is smooth and memorable.
5. What vaccinations or health precautions are required?
Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory if coming from or transiting through risk countries. Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Tanzania is a malaria-risk country, so antimalarial medication is strongly recommended. Bring mosquito repellent, long clothing for evenings, and basic personal first-aid.
6. Where can I see the Great Migration in Tanzania?
The Great Migration is a year-round event in Tanzania. From December to March, herds gather in the southern Serengeti to give birth. From May to July, they move north toward the Mara River. July to October is the best time to witness dramatic river crossings in the north before the herds enter Kenya.
7. How long should a Tanzania safari be?
A well-paced Tanzania safari takes 7 to 10 days, allowing time to explore 2–4 parks. If you're combining safari with Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro, consider 12 to 14 days. Shorter 3–5 day trips can be rewarding too, especially to the Ngorongoro and Serengeti if you're short on time.
8. Can I combine Tanzania with Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro?
Absolutely. Tanzania is ideal for a “safari and beach” holiday. After your safari, fly to Zanzibar for white sands, spice tours, and dhow cruises. Adventure seekers can also climb Mount Kilimanjaro—Africa’s highest peak—before or after their wildlife experience.
9. Are safaris in Tanzania family-friendly?
Yes—with planning. Some lodges have family suites, child-friendly menus, and offer special guides or activity packs. However, children under 6 may not be permitted on all game drives. Private safaris work best for families to control pace and interests. Cultural visits and beach stays can round out the experience for kids.
10. Is tipping expected in Tanzania?
Tipping is customary and appreciated. Typical guidelines are $10–20 per day for guides/drivers, and $5–10 per day for lodge staff (shared tip box). Always tip based on service quality and your comfort level.
