Common Questions About Our Rwanda Safaris
1. When is the best time to visit Rwanda?
The best time for gorilla trekking and general safaris is during the dry seasons: June to mid-September and December to February. Trails are less muddy, views are clearer, and wildlife is easier to spot. However, Rwanda’s climate is pleasant year-round due to its elevation, so even the green seasons (March–May and October–November) are good for birding and photography—with fewer crowds.
2. Do I need a visa to enter Rwanda?
Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival for $50, or apply online in advance. Alternatively, the East Africa Tourist Visa (shared with Uganda and Kenya) allows multiple entries within all three countries for $100. Rwanda’s immigration process is efficient, and Kigali International Airport is traveler-friendly.
3. Do I need vaccinations or malaria protection in Rwanda?
Yes. Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory if you're arriving from a country with risk. You should also consider Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Rwanda is a low-risk malaria zone, especially in highland areas like Volcanoes, but malaria prophylaxis is still recommended, particularly for visits to Akagera.
4. Can I combine Rwanda with other countries?
Absolutely! Rwanda pairs beautifully with Uganda, Kenya, or Tanzania. Its compact size and excellent roads allow you to trek gorillas in Volcanoes, then fly or drive to Serengeti or Masai Mara. The East African Tourist Visa makes border crossing seamless. Base Camp can help design seamless multi-country circuits.
5. How is Rwanda different from Uganda for gorilla trekking?
Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is more accessible and luxurious, just 2.5 hours from Kigali. It offers a smoother trekking experience but at a higher price. Uganda has more gorilla families and diverse terrain but requires longer travel between parks. Both are exceptional—Rwanda is ideal for shorter, high-end trips, while Uganda caters to broader budgets and longer stays.
6. How do I get a gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda?
Permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and cost $1,500 per person for foreign visitors. They must be booked in advance—especially during peak season. Your tour operator (like Base Camp) will secure these on your behalf and ensure you're registered properly. A portion of the fee supports gorilla conservation and local communities.
7. What is the minimum age for gorilla trekking?
The minimum age is 15 years, a rule shared by Uganda. It’s meant to ensure participant safety and minimize risk of disease transmission to gorillas. Families traveling with younger children can still enjoy golden monkey tracking, cultural tours, or game drives in Akagera.
8. What other primates can I track in Rwanda?
Besides gorillas, Rwanda offers chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest and golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Nyungwe is also home to colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and over a dozen other primates—making it one of the richest tropical forests in Africa for biodiversity.
9. Can I see the Big Five in Rwanda?
Yes! Akagera National Park, on Rwanda’s eastern border, is home to lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos—thanks to successful conservation and rewilding projects. While densities are lower than in Kenya or Tanzania, you’ll enjoy uncrowded, intimate safaris in restored habitats that support over 8,000 large mammals and 500+ bird species.
10. What types of accommodations are available?
Rwanda offers everything from budget lodges to ultra-luxury camps like One&Only and Bisate Lodge. Mid-range eco-lodges also offer great comfort and views. In Kigali, you’ll find stylish city hotels and boutique guesthouses. Base Camp partners only with trusted, sustainable, and community-supporting accommodations to deliver authentic, responsible travel.
